Service Description
Want to add more depth and textural interest to your work? Plating techniques take stained glass into the 3rd dimension, allowing for seemingly impossible breaks, shading, and variety. Students will create a small window no larger by 9"x12". Choose from a selection of patterns or email ahead of time with your idea to discuss. What you'll learn: -How to choose glass to create layered shading effects -How to assemble, solder, and finish multi-layered foil projects -How to avoid water, flux, or patina getting trapped between the layers What is included: -A selection of patterns (no larger than 9"x12", 3 layers maximum) -Use of grinders, zinc saw, cutting surfaces during class -Small amount of 1/2" copper foil What to bring or buy (all materials can be purchased here if so desired): -Pattern ideas (email ahead to discuss if you'd like something specific or original; no larger than 9"x12", 3 layers maximum) -Glass sufficient to create the chosen design -Tools & supplies for foil: Glass cutter, breaking tools (grozer and runner), soldering iron intended for stained glass work, 50% lead/50% tin solder, liquid stained glass flux, 7/32" black backed foil, homasote board, aluminum pin & strip set, fid/burnisher, 9/32" u zinc, solder patina, zinc patina, stained glass polish, patina brush, non-scratch scouring pad Basic cutting, grinding, foiling, and soldering experience necessary. Cost includes tuition only; tools and supplies extra. PLEASE NOTE: stained glass is a time consuming process; students should expect between 1 and 4 hours of homework each week. Studio time is available (when no classes are running) at a rate of $10 per hour.
